Why Paediatric Hernia Repair Is Needed

Performed when a child has an inguinal or umbilical hernia, where a portion of intestine or abdominal tissue pushes through a weak spot in the abdominal wall. Left untreated, hernias in children carry a risk of incarceration or strangulation, where the trapped tissue loses its blood supply, making timely repair important.

Signs You May Need Paediatric Hernia Repair

A visible or palpable bulge in the groin or around the belly button, especially noticeable when the child cries, coughs, or strains, is the classic sign. Irritability, vomiting, abdominal pain, or a bulge that becomes hard, tender, and does not reduce (push back in) suggest an emergency requiring urgent surgical repair.

Types of Paediatric Hernia Repair

The two main types are inguinal hernia repair (groin) and umbilical hernia repair (navel), both usually performed laparoscopically today through small keyhole incisions, though open repair remains an option, particularly for very young infants or complex cases. Bilateral inguinal hernias can often be repaired in the same laparoscopic session.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is surgery always needed for a child's hernia?

Inguinal hernias in children almost always require surgical repair since they do not resolve on their own and carry a strangulation risk, whereas small umbilical hernias sometimes close naturally by age 4-5; your pediatric surgeon can advise based on type and size.

Is the surgery safe for infants?

Yes, paediatric hernia repair is one of the most commonly performed and safest pediatric surgeries, with success rates around 99% when done by an experienced pediatric surgeon.

How long will my child stay in hospital?

Most children go home the same day or the next morning, as it is typically a day-care or overnight procedure.

Will there be a visible scar?

Laparoscopic repair leaves only tiny, barely visible scars that fade well over time, and open repair incisions are also placed in a skin crease to minimize visibility.

When can my child return to normal play and school?

Most children return to school within a week and resume normal play within 2-4 weeks, avoiding rough or strenuous activity until fully healed as advised by the surgeon.
