Why Nephrolithotomy / Kidney Stone Removal Is Needed

This procedure is recommended when kidney stones are too large to pass naturally or be broken down effectively with ESWL, are causing persistent obstruction, infection, or significant pain, or are located in a position that makes less invasive treatments ineffective. It is also chosen when a patient has a single functioning kidney and stone removal needs to be handled with particular care.

Signs You May Need Nephrolithotomy / Kidney Stone Removal

Patients typically experience severe, colicky flank pain radiating to the groin, blood in the urine, recurrent urinary tract infections, or fever suggesting an infected, obstructed kidney requiring urgent intervention. Progressive worsening of kidney function due to a long-standing obstructing stone is another important indication for surgical removal.

Types of Nephrolithotomy / Kidney Stone Removal

Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is a minimally invasive technique using a small tract created directly into the kidney to remove larger stones, while ureteroscopy uses a scope passed through the urinary tract without any external incision for smaller or mid-sized stones. Open surgical removal is reserved for very large, complex staghorn stones or cases where minimally invasive approaches are not feasible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is PCNL a major surgery?

PCNL is considered minimally invasive compared to open stone surgery, using a small tract rather than a large incision, and most patients recover considerably faster than with traditional open surgery.

How much does kidney stone removal surgery cost in India?

Costs vary by technique and stone complexity, typically ranging from Rs 60,000 for ureteroscopy to over Rs 1,50,000 for PCNL depending on the hospital and case complexity.

How long is the hospital stay?

Hospital stay generally ranges from 1 to 3 days depending on the technique used and how straightforward the stone removal turns out to be.

Will I need a stent after surgery?

A temporary ureteral stent is often placed after surgery to help urine drain while the ureter heals, and it is usually removed in a quick outpatient procedure a few weeks later.

Can kidney stones come back after removal?

Yes, kidney stones have a notable recurrence rate, so your urologist will likely recommend dietary changes, adequate hydration, and sometimes medication to reduce the risk of forming new stones.
