A dental filling is needed when tooth decay has created a cavity that must be cleaned out and sealed to stop the decay from spreading deeper into the tooth. It's also used to repair minor tooth fractures or worn areas from grinding, restoring the tooth's shape and function before more extensive damage occurs.

Signs You May Need Dental Filling

Tooth sensitivity to sweet, hot, or cold foods, visible dark spots or holes on a tooth, and pain while chewing are common signs of a cavity requiring a filling. Sometimes cavities are found only on a routine dental X-ray before any symptoms develop, which is why regular checkups help catch decay early.

Types of Dental Filling

Composite resin fillings are tooth-colored and popular for visible teeth, while amalgam (silver) fillings are more durable and traditionally used for back teeth that bear heavy chewing forces. Glass ionomer fillings, which release fluoride, are sometimes used for children's teeth or areas less prone to heavy biting pressure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does getting a filling hurt?

No, the area is numbed with local anesthesia before the decay is removed, so you shouldn't feel pain during the procedure itself.

How long does a filling take?

A single filling typically takes 30-60 minutes depending on the size and location of the cavity.

How long will my tooth be sensitive after a filling?

Mild sensitivity to hot, cold, or pressure can last 1-2 weeks and usually resolves on its own as the tooth settles.

How long do fillings last?

Composite fillings typically last 5-10 years while amalgam fillings can last even longer, though this depends on oral hygiene and chewing habits.

Can a filling fall out?

It's uncommon but possible over time due to wear or decay around the edges, so any change in how a filling feels should be checked by your dentist promptly.
