Why ACL Reconstruction Is Needed

ACL tears typically result from sports involving sudden stops, pivoting, or jumping such as football, basketball, or skiing, where the knee twists while the foot stays planted. Direct trauma, a fall, or a road traffic accident can also rupture the ligament. Reconstruction becomes necessary when the torn ACL causes ongoing knee instability that limits sports participation or daily activity, or when it occurs alongside meniscus or cartilage damage.

Signs You May Need ACL Reconstruction

A loud pop at the time of injury followed by immediate swelling and severe pain is the classic warning sign of an ACL tear. Patients often describe the knee giving way or buckling during pivoting movements, running, or climbing stairs. Reduced range of motion, persistent instability, and a feeling that the knee cannot be trusted to bear weight during sport or twisting motions point toward the need for surgical reconstruction.

Types of ACL Reconstruction

The graft used to rebuild the ligament can be autograft (the patient's own hamstring tendon, patellar tendon, or quadriceps tendon) or allograft (donor tissue), each with different trade-offs in strength, harvest-site pain, and recovery time. The reconstruction itself is almost always performed arthroscopically rather than through open surgery. Some surgeons also offer single-bundle versus double-bundle techniques depending on the pattern of ligament damage and the patient's activity level.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does ACL reconstruction cost in India?

Costs vary by city, hospital, and graft type, generally ranging from moderate to higher-end surgical package pricing; your orthopedic surgeon can give an exact quote after evaluating your MRI and insurance coverage.

Is ACL surgery painful?

You'll be under general or spinal anesthesia during the procedure itself, so there's no pain then; post-operative discomfort is managed with medication and typically eases significantly within the first two weeks.

How long before I can play sports again?

Most patients return to competitive sport in 9-12 months after completing a structured physiotherapy program, though light activity and desk work can resume much sooner.

Can an ACL tear heal without surgery?

Partial tears or low-demand patients may manage with physiotherapy and bracing, but a complete tear in an active individual usually needs reconstruction to restore full stability — discuss your specific case with an orthopedic surgeon.

What are the risks of ACL reconstruction?

As with any surgery, risks include infection, stiffness, graft failure, or re-tear, though the overall success rate is around 90% with good rehabilitation compliance.
