Why EEG (Electroencephalogram) Is Needed

An EEG is ordered to investigate suspected seizures or epilepsy, unexplained episodes of altered consciousness, or to characterise sleep disorders and abnormal brain wave patterns. It is also used to evaluate encephalopathy, confirm brain death, or monitor brain activity during certain surgical or intensive care procedures.

Signs You May Need EEG (Electroencephalogram)

Patients are referred for an EEG when they experience convulsions or seizure-like episodes, sudden blackouts or staring spells, unexplained confusion, or repeated unusual sensations such as jerking movements or déjà vu. Sleep disturbances like excessive daytime sleepiness or suspected sleepwalking can also prompt this test.

Types of EEG (Electroencephalogram)

A routine EEG records brain activity for a short period while awake, whereas a sleep-deprived or overnight EEG increases the chance of capturing abnormal discharges linked to certain seizure types. Video EEG monitoring combines simultaneous video recording with brain wave tracing over hours or days to correlate physical events with electrical activity, particularly useful for diagnosing epilepsy that is hard to catch on a routine scan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an EEG painful or does it involve any electrical shock?

No, an EEG is completely painless and safe; small electrodes are simply attached to the scalp with a mild adhesive paste to pick up your brain's natural electrical signals.

How much does an EEG cost in India?

A standard EEG generally costs between Rs 1,000 and Rs 3,000, while video EEG monitoring over a longer duration costs considerably more.

Do I need to prepare my hair or skip food before the test?

You should wash your hair the night before without applying oil or styling products, and you can eat normally, though your neurologist may ask you to reduce sleep the night before for a sleep-deprived EEG.

How long does the test take?

A routine EEG typically takes 1 to 2 hours including electrode placement, while extended or video EEG monitoring can last several hours to a few days.

Can a normal EEG rule out epilepsy?

Not completely, since seizure activity can be intermittent and might not appear during a single recording; if your doctor still suspects epilepsy, they may recommend a repeat or extended EEG.
