Ordered when doctors need to assess metabolic or functional activity in tissues, most commonly to detect, stage, or monitor cancer, evaluate unexplained weight loss, or investigate brain disorders like dementia, epilepsy, or Parkinson's disease. It is also used to check whether cancer treatment is working by measuring changes in tumor metabolic activity.

Signs You May Need PET Scan

Patients are typically referred for a PET scan when they have a confirmed or suspected tumor requiring staging, unexplained lumps or lymph node swelling, cancer that has responded ambiguously to treatment on other scans, or neurological symptoms like memory loss or seizures needing functional brain evaluation. It is usually ordered by an oncologist or neurologist rather than driven by a single standalone symptom.

Types of PET Scan

PET scans differ mainly by the tracer used — FDG-PET (using radioactive glucose) is most common for cancer and brain imaging, while specialized tracers like PSMA-PET are used for prostate cancer and amyloid-PET for Alzheimer's evaluation. It is increasingly performed as a combined PET-CT for both metabolic and anatomical detail.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a PET scan safe?

Yes, the radiation dose from the tracer is carefully controlled and considered safe for diagnostic use, though pregnant women and young children require special precautions; discuss any concerns with your doctor.

How should I prepare for a PET scan?

You will usually need to fast for 4-6 hours beforehand, avoid strenuous exercise the day before, and inform the technician if you have diabetes, as blood sugar control affects image quality.

How long does the whole appointment take?

Including the tracer uptake waiting period, the full appointment typically takes 2-4 hours, though the actual scanning itself takes only 20-30 minutes.

When will I get my results?

A nuclear medicine specialist typically reads the scan and results are usually available within 24-48 hours, which your referring doctor will then explain to you.

Do I need to avoid other people after the scan?

Yes, it's advisable to avoid close, prolonged contact with pregnant women and young children for several hours after the scan since trace radioactivity remains in your body briefly.
