Recommended to investigate symptoms originating in the lower colon and rectum, screen for colorectal cancer or polyps, or evaluate inflammatory bowel disease affecting the sigmoid colon and rectum. It's often used as a quicker, more limited alternative to full colonoscopy when the concern is localized to the lower bowel.

Signs You May Need Sigmoidoscopy

Key symptoms prompting this test include rectal bleeding, unexplained changes in bowel habits, persistent lower abdominal or rectal pain, mucus in the stool, or a sensation of incomplete bowel emptying. It may also be used to follow up on abnormal findings from a stool test or to monitor known lower colon conditions.

Types of Sigmoidoscopy

Flexible sigmoidoscopy, using a thin flexible scope, is the standard modern approach and far more common than the older rigid sigmoidoscopy, which offered a more limited view and is now rarely used. It differs from a full colonoscopy in that it only examines the sigmoid colon and rectum rather than the entire large intestine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is sigmoidoscopy painful?

Most patients experience mild cramping or pressure rather than significant pain, and the procedure is generally quick, taking only 15-20 minutes.

Do I need sedation for a sigmoidoscopy?

Sedation is often not required or minimal, unlike a full colonoscopy, since the procedure is shorter and less invasive, though some centers offer it for anxious patients.

What preparation is needed before the test?

You'll typically need an enema or a small prep solution just before the procedure to clear the lower bowel, which is much simpler than the full bowel prep required for colonoscopy.

How does sigmoidoscopy differ from colonoscopy?

Sigmoidoscopy only examines the lower third of the colon while colonoscopy examines the entire colon, so your doctor may recommend a full colonoscopy if more complete screening or evaluation is needed.

When will I get my results?

Visual findings are often discussed immediately after the procedure, while biopsy results, if taken, usually take about a week; your gastroenterologist will guide any next steps.
