Why Spine Fusion Surgery Is Needed

Recommended for severe, persistent back pain caused by spinal instability, herniated discs that haven't responded to other treatments, or structural deformities like scoliosis where curvature threatens spinal alignment and function. It is also used to stabilize the spine after certain fractures or tumor removal.

Signs You May Need Spine Fusion Surgery

Indicators include chronic lower back or neck pain that limits daily function, pain or numbness radiating into the arms or legs from nerve compression, visible spinal curvature in scoliosis, and a sense of the spine giving way during activity. Symptoms that progressively worsen despite months of physiotherapy, medication, and bracing typically lead to a surgical fusion recommendation.

Types of Spine Fusion Surgery

This procedure uses bone grafts (from the patient, a donor, or synthetic substitutes) combined with metal screws, rods, or cages to hold vertebrae together while fusion occurs, and can be done through anterior, posterior, or combined surgical approaches. Multi-level fusion, spanning several vertebrae, is used for extensive deformities like scoliosis, while single-level fusion addresses more localized instability.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is bone fusion achieved in this surgery?

Bone graft material is placed between the vertebrae, and over several months new bone grows to permanently join them, with metal hardware providing stability while this healing occurs.

How long before I can return to work after spine fusion surgery?

Most patients return to desk-based work within 4-6 weeks, while physically demanding jobs may require 3-6 months of recovery and physiotherapy before resuming.

Will the metal hardware need to be removed later?

In most cases, the screws and rods are left in place permanently once fusion is complete, as removal is rarely necessary unless there are specific complications.

Is spine fusion surgery effective for scoliosis?

Yes, it is highly effective at halting curve progression and improving spinal alignment in significant scoliosis, particularly when performed at the right stage of curve progression.

What lifestyle changes are needed after spine fusion?

Maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding heavy lifting and high-impact activities during recovery, and following a structured physiotherapy program all support a successful long-term outcome; your surgeon will personalize this guidance.
