Types of Mastectomy
A simple (total) mastectomy removes the entire breast tissue, while a modified radical mastectomy also removes underarm lymph nodes for cancers that may have spread. Skin-sparing and nipple-sparing mastectomies preserve more of the natural skin envelope for better reconstruction outcomes, and a double mastectomy removes both breasts, often chosen for high genetic risk or cancer in both breasts.
