Why Pulmonary Function Tests (PFT) Is Needed

Ordered to diagnose and evaluate chronic respiratory conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and pulmonary fibrosis, or to investigate unexplained breathlessness. It is also used pre-operatively to assess lung capacity before major surgery, and to monitor how well a patient is responding to respiratory treatment over time.

Signs You May Need Pulmonary Function Tests (PFT)

Common reasons for referral include chronic cough, wheezing, breathlessness on exertion or at rest, chest tightness, or reduced exercise tolerance. Patients with a history of smoking, occupational dust or chemical exposure, or known lung disease are also frequently tested to track disease progression.

Types of Pulmonary Function Tests (PFT)

Spirometry, measuring how much and how fast air moves in and out of the lungs, is the most common test, while lung volume measurement (plethysmography) assesses total lung capacity, and diffusion capacity testing (DLCO) evaluates how well oxygen passes into the blood. A bronchodilator reversibility test is often added to distinguish asthma from COPD.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the pulmonary function test uncomfortable?

It is non-invasive and generally well tolerated, requiring you to breathe forcefully into a mouthpiece, though some people feel briefly lightheaded or fatigued from the deep breathing effort.

How should I prepare for a PFT?

Avoid smoking, heavy meals, and strenuous exercise for a few hours before the test, and check with your doctor about whether to hold certain inhalers beforehand as instructed.

How long does the test take?

The full assessment usually takes 30-60 minutes, including instructions, several practice breaths, and repeat measurements for accuracy.

When will I get my results?

Results are often available immediately or within 24 hours, and your pulmonologist will explain what the values mean for your specific condition.

Can I do a PFT if I have a cold or chest infection?

It's best to postpone the test until you recover, as an active respiratory infection can temporarily lower your results and affect accuracy; consult your doctor on timing.
