Why Total Knee Replacement Is Needed

Performed for advanced knee joint damage from osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or post-traumatic arthritis following injury, when cartilage has worn down enough to cause chronic pain and disability. It's generally recommended once non-surgical treatments like weight management, physiotherapy, medications, and injections no longer control symptoms.

Signs You May Need Total Knee Replacement

Common signs include persistent knee pain during rest and activity, significant stiffness and swelling, a visible deformity or bowing of the leg, and reduced range of motion that interferes with walking, climbing stairs, or standing from a seated position. Pain that worsens with weather changes and disrupts sleep is also a frequently reported symptom leading to this surgery.

Types of Total Knee Replacement

The main approaches are total knee replacement, replacing the entire joint surface, and partial (unicompartmental) knee replacement, which replaces only the damaged section when arthritis is limited to one part of the knee. Computer-assisted and robotic-assisted techniques are increasingly used for more precise implant alignment and positioning.

Modern knee implants typically last 15-20 years or longer with proper care, though this depends on factors like activity level and weight.

When can I return to normal activities after knee replacement?

Most patients resume daily activities within 6-12 weeks, while full recovery, including higher-impact activities, can take up to 6 months.

Is total knee replacement a permanent solution?

For most patients it provides long-lasting pain relief and restored function, though following your surgeon's advice on weight management and activity helps maximize the implant's lifespan.
