What is PET-CT Scan?

Positron Emission Tomography combined with CT scan uses a radioactive tracer (FDG) injected into the blood to detect metabolically active cancer cells and provide anatomical localization. Used for cancer staging, restaging, and treatment response assessment.

Why PET-CT Scan Is Needed

Primarily ordered for cancer staging at diagnosis, restaging after treatment, and assessing response to chemotherapy or radiation by identifying areas of abnormal metabolic activity combined with precise anatomical location. It also helps detect recurrence when other markers or scans raise suspicion of cancer returning.

Signs You May Need PET-CT Scan

This scan is usually recommended for patients with a known or suspected malignancy, unexplained weight loss with fatigue, persistent lymph node enlargement, or abnormal findings on a CT or MRI needing further metabolic characterization. It is rarely the first test ordered but rather a follow-up to clarify ambiguous findings or guide treatment decisions.

Types of PET-CT Scan

The main variant is whole-body FDG PET-CT for general cancer evaluation, while specialized tracers such as Ga-68 DOTATATE (for neuroendocrine tumors) or PSMA (for prostate cancer) are used for specific cancer types. Low-dose versus diagnostic-dose CT components can also be selected depending on whether additional anatomical detail is required.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is PET-CT different from a regular CT scan?

A regular CT only shows anatomy and structure, while PET-CT overlays metabolic activity onto that anatomy, helping distinguish active cancer cells from scar tissue or benign changes.

Do I need to fast before a PET-CT scan?

Yes, fasting for about 4-6 hours and avoiding sugary foods or strenuous exercise the day before is usually required for accurate tracer uptake.

Is the radiation exposure from a PET-CT scan a concern?

The combined radiation dose is higher than a plain X-ray but considered acceptable for the diagnostic benefit it provides, and your doctor will only recommend it when clinically necessary.

How soon will I get my PET-CT report?

Reports are typically ready within 24-48 hours and should be reviewed with your oncologist to interpret the findings in the context of your treatment plan.

Can diabetics undergo a PET-CT scan?

Yes, but blood sugar levels need to be well controlled before the scan since high glucose can interfere with tracer uptake and image accuracy; inform the center about your diabetes in advance.
