Why Pacemaker Implantation Is Needed

Recommended for patients with symptomatic bradycardia (dangerously slow heart rate), sick sinus syndrome, complete or high-grade heart block, or certain arrhythmias where the heart's natural electrical system fails to maintain an adequate rate. It is also used after some heart surgeries or in heart failure patients who need cardiac resynchronization.

Signs You May Need Pacemaker Implantation

Patients often experience unexplained fainting or near-fainting spells (syncope), persistent dizziness, extreme fatigue, breathlessness on exertion, or a very slow or irregular pulse. Palpitations alternating with pauses, confusion, or reduced exercise tolerance are also common warning signs prompting evaluation for a pacemaker.

Types of Pacemaker Implantation

Pacemakers range from single-chamber (pacing one heart chamber) to dual-chamber (pacing both the right atrium and ventricle) and biventricular devices used for cardiac resynchronization therapy in heart failure. Newer leadless pacemakers are implanted directly inside the heart without wires, while traditional transvenous pacemakers use leads placed through a vein under the collarbone.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a pacemaker implantation cost in India?

Costs vary widely depending on the device type (single, dual-chamber, or biventricular) and hospital, given that the device itself is a major cost driver; your cardiologist can give an exact estimate after evaluation.

Is the pacemaker implantation procedure painful?

The area is numbed with local anesthesia and sedation, so most patients feel only mild pressure during the procedure, with some soreness at the incision site normal for a few days afterward.

How long does a pacemaker battery last?

Most modern pacemaker batteries last 8-12 years depending on usage, after which only the device, not the leads, typically needs replacement.

Can I use a mobile phone or go through airport security with a pacemaker?

Yes, though it's advisable to inform security staff and keep phones or magnetic devices at least 6 inches from the pacemaker site; discuss any device-specific precautions with your cardiologist.

When can I resume normal activities after pacemaker implantation?

Most patients resume light activities within a few days but should avoid raising the implanted-side arm above the shoulder for about 4 weeks to let the leads settle; follow your doctor's specific timeline.
