Why Kidney Biopsy Is Needed

A kidney biopsy is performed when blood or urine tests reveal unexplained kidney dysfunction, protein or blood in the urine of unclear cause, or suspected autoimmune conditions like lupus nephritis affecting the kidneys. It is also used to diagnose the specific type of glomerulonephritis or nephrotic syndrome so that treatment can be precisely targeted.

Signs You May Need Kidney Biopsy

Patients are typically referred for a biopsy when they have unexplained swelling in the legs or around the eyes, foamy or bloody urine, rapidly worsening kidney function on blood tests, or high blood pressure linked to kidney disease. A sudden, unexplained decline in kidney function (acute kidney injury) without an obvious cause is another key indication.

Types of Kidney Biopsy

The most common approach is a percutaneous biopsy, where a needle is guided by ultrasound through the skin into the kidney to obtain a tissue sample, performed under local anaesthesia with sedation. In select cases where percutaneous access is risky, an open or laparoscopic biopsy performed surgically, or a transjugular approach through a vein, may be used instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a kidney biopsy dangerous?

It is generally safe when performed by an experienced nephrologist using ultrasound guidance, though there is a small risk of bleeding, which is why patients are monitored closely for several hours afterward.

How much does a kidney biopsy cost in India?

Costs typically range from Rs 15,000 to Rs 30,000 including hospital observation, though this can vary based on the facility and any additional pathology testing required.

Is the procedure painful?

The area is numbed with local anaesthesia, so you'll feel pressure rather than sharp pain during the biopsy, though some soreness at the site is common for a day or two afterward.

Is blood in the urine after the biopsy normal?

Yes, mild blood in the urine for 24 to 48 hours after the procedure is expected and usually resolves on its own, but you should inform your doctor if it is heavy or persists longer.

How long until I get the biopsy results?

Initial results are often available within a few days, though specialised staining and analysis for certain conditions can take up to a couple of weeks to finalise.
