Why Nerve Conduction Study (NCS) Is Needed

An NCS is ordered to investigate suspected nerve damage or compression, such as in carpal tunnel syndrome, diabetic neuropathy, or nerve injuries following trauma, and to distinguish nerve problems from muscle disorders. It helps pinpoint the exact location and severity of nerve dysfunction to guide treatment decisions, including whether surgery is needed.

Signs You May Need Nerve Conduction Study (NCS)

Patients are typically referred for this test when they experience numbness, tingling, or a burning sensation in the hands or feet, unexplained muscle weakness, or pain that seems to follow the path of a specific nerve. Symptoms like difficulty gripping objects or nighttime hand numbness, characteristic of carpal tunnel syndrome, are common triggers for this evaluation.

Types of Nerve Conduction Study (NCS)

NCS is often performed alongside electromyography (EMG), which assesses the electrical activity of muscles themselves, together providing a complete picture of whether a problem originates in the nerve, the muscle, or the connection between them. Motor nerve conduction studies assess nerves controlling movement while sensory nerve conduction studies evaluate nerves responsible for sensation, and both may be tested depending on the suspected condition.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a nerve conduction study painful?

You may feel brief, mild electrical tingling sensations as small pulses are delivered to stimulate the nerve, which some patients find uncomfortable but is generally well tolerated and over quickly.

How much does an NCS cost in India?

Costs typically range from Rs 2,500 to Rs 6,000 depending on how many nerves are tested and whether it is combined with an EMG.

Do I need to prepare for this test in any way?

You should avoid applying lotions or oils to your skin before the test and inform your doctor if you have a pacemaker or bleeding disorder, but otherwise no special preparation is needed.

How soon will I get the results?

The neurologist conducting the test can often share initial findings immediately after the study, with a formal written report typically available within a few days.

Can this test diagnose carpal tunnel syndrome definitively?

Yes, NCS is one of the most reliable tests for confirming carpal tunnel syndrome and assessing its severity, which helps your doctor decide between conservative treatment and surgery.
