Mastectomy is performed to treat diagnosed breast cancer, particularly when the tumour is large relative to breast size, multiple tumours are present, or breast-conserving surgery (lumpectomy) is not a suitable option. It is also performed preventively in high-risk patients, such as those carrying BRCA gene mutations, to significantly reduce future cancer risk.

Signs You May Need Mastectomy

Patients considering mastectomy typically have a confirmed diagnosis of breast cancer through biopsy, often after noticing a lump, skin changes, nipple retraction, or abnormal mammogram findings. In preventive cases, patients may have no symptoms at all but a strong family history or genetic test result indicating very high future breast cancer risk.

Types of Mastectomy

A simple (total) mastectomy removes the entire breast tissue, while a modified radical mastectomy also removes underarm lymph nodes for cancers that may have spread. Skin-sparing and nipple-sparing mastectomies preserve more of the natural skin envelope for better reconstruction outcomes, and a double mastectomy removes both breasts, often chosen for high genetic risk or cancer in both breasts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I need chemotherapy or radiation after mastectomy?

This depends on the cancer's stage, type, and lymph node involvement; your oncology team will determine whether additional treatments are needed based on the pathology results after surgery.

Can I have breast reconstruction after mastectomy?

Yes, reconstruction using implants or your own tissue can often be done at the same time as mastectomy or planned for later, and this is an important conversation to have with your surgeon before the operation.

How much does mastectomy cost in India?

Costs vary based on whether reconstruction is included and the extent of surgery, generally ranging from Rs 1,00,000 to Rs 3,00,000 or more; your surgical oncologist can provide a personalised estimate.

How long is the recovery period?

Most patients need 3 to 6 weeks to recover from the surgery itself, though full recovery, especially if reconstruction or additional cancer treatment is involved, can take longer.

Will I lose all sensation in the chest area?

Some numbness in the chest and underarm area is common after mastectomy due to nerve involvement, and while sensation may partially return over time, some degree of numbness can be permanent.
