Why Deep Brain Stimulation Is Needed

Deep brain stimulation is recommended for patients with Parkinson's disease, essential tremor, or dystonia whose symptoms are no longer adequately controlled by medication alone, or who experience significant medication side effects. It offers an option to improve motor symptoms and quality of life when disease progression outpaces what drug therapy can manage.

Signs You May Need Deep Brain Stimulation

Worsening tremors that interfere with daily tasks like eating or writing, increasing muscle rigidity, slowness of movement, and unpredictable on-off fluctuations in medication response are key indicators that a patient may benefit from DBS. Involuntary muscle contractions from dystonia that don't respond well to medication are another common indication.

Types of Deep Brain Stimulation

Electrode placement targets different brain structures depending on the condition being treated, most commonly the subthalamic nucleus or globus pallidus for Parkinson's disease, and the thalamus for essential tremor. Some systems use a single implanted pulse generator to stimulate both sides of the brain, while others use two separate devices depending on symptom severity and distribution.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is deep brain stimulation reversible?

Yes, unlike some other surgical treatments, DBS doesn't destroy brain tissue and the stimulation can be adjusted or turned off, which is one of its major advantages.

How soon will I notice improvement after DBS?

Some benefits appear soon after surgery, but full optimization through device programming typically takes several weeks to months as settings are fine-tuned.

Will I still need medication after DBS?

Most patients continue some medication after DBS, though often at reduced doses, and your neurologist will adjust your regimen based on your response.

Is DBS surgery safe?

It has a success rate around 88% for appropriate candidates, though as with any brain surgery there are risks like infection or bleeding that your neurosurgical team will discuss with you.

How long does the battery in the device last?

Battery life varies by device and usage settings, typically lasting several years before a simple replacement procedure is needed — your neurologist can give specifics for your device.
