Why Myringotomy with Grommet Insertion Is Needed

This procedure is recommended for children or adults with recurrent middle ear infections or persistent fluid buildup behind the eardrum (otitis media with effusion) that hasn't resolved with medication, particularly when it is affecting hearing or speech development. It relieves pressure and prevents the cycle of repeated infections by allowing continuous drainage and ventilation of the middle ear.

Signs You May Need Myringotomy with Grommet Insertion

Common signs include recurrent ear infections with fever and ear pain, a feeling of fullness or popping in the ear, muffled hearing or reduced responsiveness to sounds, especially in young children, and delayed speech development linked to hearing difficulty. Fluid visible behind the eardrum on examination, persisting for three months or more, is a key clinical indicator.

Types of Myringotomy with Grommet Insertion

Short-term grommets are designed to fall out naturally within 6 to 12 months as the ear heals, while long-term (T-tube) grommets are used for more chronic or recurrent cases and may stay in place for a longer duration, sometimes requiring surgical removal. The choice depends on the severity and recurrence pattern of the underlying ear condition.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a painful procedure?

It is a very quick procedure done under general anaesthesia in children or local anaesthesia in cooperative adults, so there is no pain during the procedure itself, and recovery discomfort is typically minimal.

How much does grommet insertion cost in India?

Costs generally range from Rs 20,000 to Rs 40,000 depending on whether it's done under general or local anaesthesia and the hospital chosen.

Will my child's hearing improve immediately?

Most children notice a significant improvement in hearing very soon after the procedure, once the fluid has been drained and the middle ear can ventilate properly.

Can my child swim with grommets in place?

Doctors generally advise keeping ears dry and avoiding swimming, or using earplugs if swimming is necessary, to reduce the risk of water entering the middle ear through the tube.

What happens when the grommets fall out?

Most grommets are naturally pushed out by the eardrum's healing process within 6 to 18 months, and the small hole they leave usually closes on its own without further treatment.
