Why Upper GI Endoscopy (OGD) Is Needed

Performed to investigate symptoms of the upper digestive tract, diagnose conditions like peptic ulcers, gastritis, acid reflux (GERD), Barrett's esophagus, and to identify the source of gastrointestinal bleeding. It also allows doctors to take biopsies for further testing, including checking for H. pylori infection or ruling out malignancy.

Signs You May Need Upper GI Endoscopy (OGD)

Common symptoms prompting this test include persistent heartburn or acid reflux unresponsive to medication, difficulty or pain when swallowing, unexplained upper abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting, vomiting blood, or black, tarry stools suggesting internal bleeding. Unexplained weight loss combined with digestive symptoms is another key indication for endoscopy.

Types of Upper GI Endoscopy (OGD)

Diagnostic endoscopy simply examines the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum and may include biopsies, while therapeutic endoscopy can treat conditions found during the same procedure, such as stopping active bleeding, removing polyps, or dilating a narrowed esophagus. Capsule endoscopy, using a swallowed camera pill, is a less common alternative used mainly for evaluating the small intestine beyond the reach of standard endoscopy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an upper GI endoscopy painful?

Most patients experience only mild discomfort like gagging as the scope passes, especially with throat-numbing spray, and IV sedation is often available to make the procedure more comfortable.

Do I need to fast before the procedure?

Yes, fasting for about 6-8 hours beforehand is required so the stomach is empty, allowing clear visualization and reducing the risk of complications.

How long does recovery take after endoscopy?

If sedation was used, you'll need someone to drive you home and should rest for the remainder of the day, while throat soreness typically resolves within 24 hours.

When will I get my biopsy results if taken?

Biopsy results usually take about 5-7 days, while the visual findings from the procedure itself are often discussed with you shortly after you wake from sedation.

Are there risks with upper GI endoscopy?

It is a very safe procedure overall, though rare risks include bleeding, perforation, or reaction to sedation; your gastroenterologist will discuss these in the context of your individual health.
