What is Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS)?

Electrodes are surgically implanted into specific brain regions and connected to a pulse generator in the chest. Electrical impulses regulate abnormal brain signals — used for Parkinson's disease, tremors, and dystonia.

Why Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) Is Needed

DBS becomes an option when Parkinson's disease, essential tremor, or dystonia symptoms progress to the point where oral medications no longer provide reliable symptom control or cause disabling side effects like dyskinesia. It's typically considered after a thorough evaluation confirms the patient will respond well to targeted brain stimulation.

Signs You May Need Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS)

Motor fluctuations where medication effects wear off unpredictably, disabling tremor that limits independence, and increasing rigidity or slowness affecting daily function are the primary indicators for considering DBS. Dystonia causing painful, sustained muscle contractions resistant to other treatments is another key symptom pattern.

Types of Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS)

The procedure can be done as an awake craniotomy, allowing the surgical team to test stimulation and monitor symptom response in real time during electrode placement, or under general anesthesia with imaging-guided targeting for patients unable to tolerate being awake. The implanted pulse generator is placed in the chest and connected to electrodes in the brain, with settings later adjusted externally without further surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does DBS surgery take?

The full procedure, including electrode implantation and device placement, typically takes 4-6 hours.

Is DBS a cure for Parkinson's disease?

No, it doesn't cure the underlying disease but can significantly improve motor symptoms and quality of life, with a success rate around 80% in well-selected patients.

What is the recovery like after DBS?

Most patients spend 1-2 days in the ICU and 5-7 days in the hospital, with device programming continuing over several follow-up visits before full benefit is reached in 3-6 months.

Can DBS be adjusted after surgery?

Yes, the stimulation settings can be non-invasively adjusted during follow-up visits to optimize symptom control and minimize side effects.

What are the risks of DBS surgery?

Risks include infection, bleeding, or stimulation-related side effects like tingling or mood changes, all of which your neurosurgery team will monitor closely and can often be managed by adjusting settings.
