About Uric Acid
The Uric Acid test measures the level of uric acid in your blood, a waste product formed naturally when your body breaks down purines — compounds found in your own cells as well as certain foods.
Normally, uric acid dissolves in the blood and is filtered out through the kidneys into urine, but when the body produces too much or the kidneys can't clear it efficiently enough, uric acid crystals can form and deposit in joints and tissues, causing the intensely painful condition known as gout.
Beyond gout, uric acid levels are also relevant to kidney stone formation and, more recently, have been studied as a possible marker linked to cardiovascular and metabolic health.
This test is quick, requires only a standard blood draw, and is often ordered alongside kidney function tests since the two are closely related.
When Should You Get This Test?
Your doctor may order a uric acid test if you have:
- Sudden, severe joint pain and swelling, especially in the big toe
- Recurrent kidney stones
- Monitoring during chemotherapy, which can rapidly raise uric acid
- A family history of gout
Conditions This Test Can Detect
Uric acid levels are directly related to:
- Gout, a form of inflammatory arthritis caused by uric acid crystal deposits
- Uric acid kidney stones
- Chronic kidney disease
- Tumor lysis syndrome, a complication of certain cancer treatments

How to Prepare
- Fasting for at least 4 hours is generally recommended before this test.
- Avoid alcohol, particularly beer, for at least 24 hours before testing, as it significantly raises uric acid levels.
- Try to limit purine-rich foods like red meat, organ meats, and shellfish the day before the test.
Normal Reference Ranges
| Parameter | Normal Range |
|---|---|
| Men | 3.4–7.0 mg/dL |
| Women | 2.4–6.0 mg/dL |
Elevated uric acid alone doesn't necessarily mean you have or will develop gout — many people with high levels never experience symptoms — but persistently high levels do raise the future risk and may prompt dietary or medical management.

Frequently Asked Questions
What foods should I avoid if my uric acid is high?
Red meat, organ meats, shellfish, sugary drinks, and alcohol — especially beer — are the most significant dietary contributors to elevated uric acid and are typically the first things doctors recommend limiting.
Does high uric acid always cause gout?
No, many people have elevated uric acid without ever developing gout symptoms; however, higher and more prolonged elevations do increase the overall risk over time.
Can uric acid levels change quickly?
Yes, certain triggers like alcohol binges, crash dieting, dehydration, or starting certain cancer treatments can cause rapid changes in uric acid levels.
