About HbA1c
HbA1c, also called glycated or glycosylated hemoglobin, measures the percentage of hemoglobin in your blood that has sugar (glucose) attached to it.
Because red blood cells live for about three months, and glucose attaches to hemoglobin in proportion to how much sugar is circulating in your blood over that period, HbA1c effectively provides an average picture of your blood sugar control over the preceding two to three months.
This makes it fundamentally different from a fasting glucose test, which only captures your blood sugar at a single moment in time and can be affected by what you ate the night before or how well you slept.
HbA1c has become the preferred test for both diagnosing diabetes and monitoring long-term blood sugar control in people already living with the condition, largely because it doesn't require fasting and gives a more stable, representative picture.
When Should You Get This Test?
HbA1c testing is recommended for:
- Diagnosing diabetes or prediabetes
- Routine 3–6 month monitoring for people with known diabetes
- Adults over 45, or younger adults with risk factors like obesity or a family history of diabetes
- Women with a history of gestational diabetes
- Anyone with symptoms like excessive thirst, frequent urination, or unexplained weight loss
Conditions This Test Can Detect
HbA1c is used to diagnose and monitor:
- Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes
- Prediabetes, an early warning stage before full diabetes develops
- How effectively current diabetes treatment is controlling blood sugar

How to Prepare
- No fasting is required — HbA1c can be tested at any time of day, regardless of when you last ate.
- Certain conditions like anemia, recent blood loss, or specific hemoglobin variants can affect accuracy, so mention any known blood disorders to your doctor.
- There's no need to change your diet or medication before this test, since it reflects a long-term average rather than a single-day snapshot.
Normal Reference Ranges
| Parameter | Normal Range |
|---|---|
| Normal | Below 5.7% |
| Prediabetes | 5.7% – 6.4% |
| Diabetes | 6.5% or higher |
For people already diagnosed with diabetes, most treatment targets aim for an HbA1c below 7%, though your doctor may set a slightly different individual target based on your age, other health conditions, and risk of low blood sugar episodes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to fast for HbA1c?
No, unlike fasting blood glucose, HbA1c doesn't require fasting since it measures an average over months rather than your blood sugar at a single moment.
How often should I repeat this test?
Most people with diabetes are advised to test every 3 months if treatment has recently changed, or twice a year once blood sugar is well controlled and stable.
Can HbA1c results be inaccurate in some people?
Yes, conditions that affect red blood cell lifespan — such as certain anemias, recent significant blood loss, or specific hemoglobin variants — can make HbA1c less reliable, and your doctor may use fasting glucose instead in these cases.
What's the difference between HbA1c and fasting glucose?
Fasting glucose reflects your blood sugar at one specific moment, while HbA1c reflects your average blood sugar control over the previous 2–3 months, making it less affected by day-to-day fluctuations.
