Causes of Thyroid Nodule
Iodine deficiency, autoimmune thyroid conditions such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis, benign colloid or adenomatous growths, and thyroid cysts are common causes. Risk factors for malignancy include prior radiation exposure to the neck, family history of thyroid cancer, and certain genetic syndromes. Most nodules develop from localized overgrowth of thyroid cells rather than a systemic process.
