Causes of Prematurity
Results from a wide range of factors that trigger labor or necessitate delivery before term, including maternal infections, preeclampsia, multiple pregnancies such as twins or triplets, uterine or cervical abnormalities, and chronic maternal health conditions like high blood pressure or diabetes. Risk factors include prior preterm birth, smoking or substance use during pregnancy, inadequate prenatal care, and pregnancies conceived through assisted reproductive technology, which more commonly result in multiples.
