📖What is Urinary Tract Infection?
A urinary tract infection is a bacterial infection that can affect any part of the urinary system, including the bladder, urethra, ureters, or kidneys, most commonly involving the bladder. It occurs when bacteria, typically from the digestive tract, enter the urinary tract and multiply, triggering inflammation of the lining. Women are considerably more prone to urinary tract infections than men due to a shorter urethra that allows bacteria easier access to the bladder. While bladder infections are usually uncomfortable but not dangerous, infection that spreads upward to the kidneys can become a serious condition requiring urgent treatment. Prompt diagnosis with a urine test and appropriate antibiotic treatment typically resolve the infection quickly.
