Causes of Glaucoma
Glaucoma most often results from a buildup of fluid, called aqueous humor, inside the eye due to inadequate drainage, which raises intraocular pressure and gradually damages the optic nerve. Risk factors include older age, family history, naturally high eye pressure, thin corneas, extreme nearsightedness or farsightedness, diabetes, and long-term steroid use. In angle-closure glaucoma specifically, the eye's drainage angle becomes physically blocked, causing a rapid and dangerous pressure spike.
