What is Appendicitis?
Appendicitis is the acute inflammation of the appendix, a small finger-shaped pouch attached to the large intestine, most commonly caused by an obstruction that leads to bacterial overgrowth, swelling, and infection within the appendix wall. It is one of the most common causes of emergency abdominal surgery worldwide and can affect people of any age, though it is most frequent in adolescents and young adults. If untreated, the inflamed appendix can rupture, spilling infected contents into the abdominal cavity and causing potentially life-threatening peritonitis. Prompt recognition and treatment are essential to prevent this complication.
