Causes of Gangrene
Most commonly results from severely compromised blood flow due to peripheral arterial disease, diabetes-related vascular and nerve damage, or a blood clot cutting off circulation. Serious bacterial infections, deep wounds, frostbite, and severe trauma that damages blood vessels can also cause gangrene by depriving tissue of oxygen. Risk factors include diabetes, smoking, obesity, immunosuppression, and untreated peripheral arterial disease.
