Causes of Overactive Bladder
Results from involuntary, overactive contractions of the detrusor muscle within the bladder wall, which can be triggered by nerve signaling abnormalities, bladder irritation, or, in many cases, no clearly identifiable cause. Risk factors include neurological conditions such as stroke, multiple sclerosis or Parkinson's disease, urinary tract infections, bladder outlet obstruction from an enlarged prostate, obesity, and excessive caffeine or alcohol intake. Aging-related changes in bladder muscle and nerve function also contribute.
