What is Type 1 Diabetes?
Type 1 diabetes is a chronic autoimmune condition in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells within the pancreas, leading to little or no natural insulin production. Without adequate insulin, glucose cannot enter the body's cells to be used for energy and instead accumulates in the bloodstream, causing high blood sugar levels that, if untreated, can lead to a dangerous condition called diabetic ketoacidosis. The condition most commonly develops in children, adolescents, and young adults, though it can occur at any age, and its onset is often relatively sudden compared to the more gradual development of type 2 diabetes. Unlike type 2 diabetes, type 1 diabetes is not related to lifestyle factors such as diet or body weight and cannot be prevented. Lifelong insulin therapy, combined with careful blood sugar monitoring, is essential for managing the condition and preventing both short-term and long-term complications.
