Causes of Otitis Media
Otitis media most often develops when a cold, sinus infection, or allergy causes swelling of the Eustachian tube, preventing normal drainage of fluid from the middle ear and creating a favorable environment for bacterial or viral growth. Children are especially prone to it because their Eustachian tubes are shorter, narrower, and more horizontally positioned than in adults. Risk factors include daycare attendance, exposure to secondhand smoke, bottle-feeding while lying down, and a family history of frequent ear infections.
