Causes of Aortic Aneurysm
Results from progressive degeneration of the elastic and muscular components of the aortic wall, most commonly related to atherosclerosis, chronic high blood pressure, and smoking. Risk factors include advancing age, male sex, family history of aneurysms, connective tissue disorders such as Marfan syndrome, and prior aortic injury or infection. The combination of wall weakness and sustained blood pressure gradually enlarges the vessel over time.
