Causes of Malnutrition
Malnutrition results from inadequate intake of calories, protein, or essential micronutrients relative to the body's needs, which can stem from food insecurity and poverty, restrictive diets, chronic illness that increases nutritional requirements or impairs absorption, and conditions affecting appetite or the ability to eat or digest food normally. In children, inadequate breastfeeding or complementary feeding practices are significant contributors in many settings. Underlying medical conditions such as chronic infections, gastrointestinal disease, cancer, and eating disorders can also lead to malnutrition even when food is available.
