Causes of Acute Poisoning
Acute poisoning results from exposure to a toxic dose of a substance, which can occur accidentally, particularly in young children who ingest household chemicals or medications, or intentionally in cases of self-harm or substance misuse. Occupational exposure to industrial chemicals, contaminated food or water, incorrect medication dosing, and drug interactions are also common causes. Carbon monoxide poisoning from faulty heating systems or generators used in enclosed spaces is a particularly dangerous and often unrecognized cause.
