Causes of Pancreatitis
Most commonly caused by gallstones blocking the pancreatic duct or by heavy, prolonged alcohol consumption, both of which trigger premature activation of digestive enzymes within the pancreas. Other causes include very high triglyceride levels, certain medications, abdominal trauma, and, less commonly, genetic conditions or autoimmune disease. Smoking increases the risk of both acute and chronic pancreatitis and accelerates progression in chronic cases.
