What is Occupational Lung Disease?

Occupational lung disease refers to a group of respiratory conditions caused by prolonged exposure to harmful substances in the workplace, including dust, chemical fumes, gases, or other airborne particles that damage the lungs over time. Common forms include pneumoconiosis, caused by inhaling mineral dust such as coal, silica, or asbestos, occupational asthma, triggered by workplace allergens or irritants, and chronic bronchitis or reduced lung function from long-term exposure to industrial pollutants. Because lung damage from many of these exposures accumulates gradually and often silently over years, symptoms may not become apparent until significant, sometimes irreversible, lung damage has already occurred.
