What is Gingivitis?
Gingivitis is the earliest and mildest stage of gum disease, characterized by inflammation of the gums caused by the buildup of bacterial plaque along the gumline. It develops when plaque is not adequately removed through regular brushing and flossing, allowing bacteria to irritate and inflame the surrounding gum tissue. At this stage, the underlying bone and connective tissue that anchor the teeth remain unaffected, making gingivitis fully reversible with proper oral hygiene and professional cleaning. If left untreated, however, it can progress to periodontitis, a more serious and irreversible form of gum disease.
