Causes of Gingivitis
Gingivitis is primarily caused by the accumulation of bacterial plaque, a sticky film that forms on teeth when food particles and bacteria are not adequately removed through brushing and flossing. Contributing factors include poor oral hygiene, smoking, hormonal changes during pregnancy or puberty, certain medications that reduce saliva flow, and poorly fitting dental restorations that trap plaque. Uncontrolled diabetes and nutritional deficiencies can also increase susceptibility to gum inflammation.
