Causes of Bronchiectasis
Most commonly caused by a history of severe or repeated respiratory infections in childhood or adulthood, including pneumonia, whooping cough, or tuberculosis, which damage the airway walls. Underlying conditions such as cystic fibrosis, primary ciliary dyskinesia, immune deficiencies, and autoimmune diseases can predispose individuals to recurrent infections and subsequent airway damage. In India, prior tuberculosis infection is a particularly important and common cause of bronchiectasis.
