What is Conjunctivitis?
Conjunctivitis, commonly known as pink eye, is inflammation of the conjunctiva, the thin transparent membrane covering the white of the eye and lining the inner surface of the eyelids. It can be caused by viral or bacterial infection, allergens, or chemical irritants, and typically presents with redness, discharge, and discomfort in one or both eyes. Viral conjunctivitis is highly contagious and often accompanies a common cold, while bacterial conjunctivitis produces thicker discharge and allergic conjunctivitis is linked to seasonal or environmental triggers. Most cases are self-limiting and resolve within one to two weeks, though prompt hygiene measures help prevent further spread.
