📖What is Prematurity?

Prematurity refers to birth occurring before 37 completed weeks of pregnancy, and is a leading cause of illness and complications in newborns because many organ systems, particularly the lungs and brain, are not yet fully developed at the time of birth. The degree of prematurity, ranging from late preterm to extremely preterm, strongly influences the range and severity of potential complications a baby may face, with earlier gestational age generally associated with greater medical risk. Advances in neonatal intensive care have significantly improved survival and long-term outcomes for premature infants, though many still require specialized care and long-term follow-up.
