It is thought to result from loose hair being driven into the skin through friction and pressure in this area, leading to a foreign body reaction. The condition ranges from an asymptomatic small pit to a painful, infected abscess, and it commonly recurs, particularly in young adults who sit for prolonged periods or have a hairy, deep gluteal cleft.
