📖What is Peyronie's Disease?
Peyronie's disease is a condition in which fibrous scar tissue, called plaque, develops beneath the skin of the penis, causing it to curve or bend, often significantly, during erection. This scar tissue forms within the elastic sheath that normally allows the penis to expand evenly during an erection, and because the affected area cannot stretch as well as the surrounding healthy tissue, the penis bends toward the side where the plaque has formed. The condition typically develops gradually, often following a period of penile trauma, and can cause pain, particularly during the early inflammatory phase, along with significant curvature that may make sexual intercourse difficult or impossible in severe cases. Beyond the physical symptoms, Peyronie's disease frequently causes considerable emotional distress, anxiety, and relationship strain, making comprehensive care that addresses both physical and psychological aspects important.
