Organ enlargement, described by the medical suffix megaly, refers to an abnormal increase in the size of an internal organ such as the liver, spleen, heart, or kidneys, usually identified through physical examination or imaging studies. It is not itself a specific disease but rather a clinical sign that reflects an underlying process, which may include infection, inflammation, congestion from impaired blood flow, infiltration by abnormal cells, or a tumour within the organ. The pattern, degree, and combination of organs affected often provide important diagnostic clues pointing toward specific underlying conditions. Identifying the cause of organ enlargement typically requires a combination of blood tests, imaging, and sometimes biopsy.
