📖What is Multiple Sclerosis?

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic autoimmune disease in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the protective covering called myelin that surrounds nerve fibres in the brain and spinal cord, disrupting the normal transmission of nerve signals throughout the body. This damage, known as demyelination, can occur at multiple different sites within the central nervous system at different times, which is reflected in the disease's name and explains the wide variety of symptoms that can occur depending on which nerve pathways are affected. The disease typically follows one of several patterns, with many patients experiencing distinct relapses of new or worsening symptoms followed by periods of partial or complete recovery, while others experience a more steadily progressive course. Multiple sclerosis most commonly affects young adults, particularly women, and while it is not directly life-threatening for most patients, it can lead to significant and cumulative disability over time if not well managed. While there is no cure, a range of disease-modifying medications can significantly reduce relapse frequency and slow long-term disability progression.
