📖What is Malignancy?

Malignancy refers to the presence of cancer, a disease process in which cells grow and divide uncontrollably, evade the body's normal regulatory signals, and gain the ability to invade surrounding tissue and spread to distant sites through the bloodstream or lymphatic system. Unlike benign growths, which remain confined and rarely threaten life, malignant tumours can infiltrate nearby organs and establish secondary tumours elsewhere in the body, a process called metastasis, which is responsible for the majority of cancer-related deaths. Malignancy can arise in virtually any tissue of the body and is confirmed through biopsy and pathological examination of the abnormal cells under a microscope. Diagnosis of malignancy triggers further staging investigations to determine the extent of disease and guide treatment planning.
