What is Eating Disorder?

Eating Disorder refers to a group of serious mental health conditions characterized by persistent disturbances in eating behaviors and related thoughts and emotions, including conditions such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder. These conditions involve an unhealthy preoccupation with food, body weight, and shape that significantly impacts physical health, emotional wellbeing, and daily functioning. Eating disorders can cause serious, sometimes life-threatening medical complications affecting the heart, digestive system, bones, and other organs. They most commonly begin during adolescence or young adulthood but can affect individuals of any age or gender.

Causes of Eating Disorder

Results from a complex interaction of genetic predisposition, psychological factors such as low self-esteem or perfectionism, and sociocultural pressures around body image and thinness. Trauma, family dynamics, and coexisting mental health conditions like anxiety or depression also significantly contribute to the development of disordered eating patterns.

Symptoms of Eating Disorder

Extreme preoccupation with body weight and shape, severe restriction of food intake, episodes of binge eating, self-induced vomiting or laxative misuse, significant weight fluctuations, distorted body image, social withdrawal around meals, fatigue and dizziness, irregular menstrual cycles

Treatment & Types of Eating Disorder in Pathardi, Nashik, Maharashtra

Treatment typically requires a multidisciplinary approach combining psychotherapy, nutritional counseling, and medical monitoring to address both the psychological and physical aspects of the disorder. Severe cases with significant medical complications may require hospitalization for nutritional rehabilitation, and family-based therapy is particularly effective for adolescents.

The main recognised eating disorders are anorexia nervosa, involving severe food restriction and an intense fear of weight gain; bulimia nervosa, involving cycles of binge eating followed by compensatory behaviours like vomiting; and binge eating disorder, involving recurrent episodes of eating large amounts of food without subsequent purging. Other specified feeding and eating disorders capture presentations that don't fit neatly into these three categories but still cause significant distress and health risk.
