What is Ingrown Toenail?

An ingrown toenail is a common condition in which the edge or corner of a toenail, most often the big toe, grows into the surrounding soft skin rather than straight across, causing pain, irritation, and often secondary infection. It typically develops gradually as the nail edge pierces the skin fold along the side of the nail, triggering an inflammatory response that can progress to redness, swelling, and drainage if left untreated. While often a minor nuisance, ingrown toenails can become significantly more serious in people with diabetes or poor circulation, where even minor foot infections can progress rapidly and are slower to heal. Prompt attention to early symptoms and proper nail care can prevent most cases from becoming infected.

Causes of Ingrown Toenail

Ingrown toenails most commonly result from improperly trimming the toenails too short or with rounded rather than straight edges, wearing tight or ill-fitting shoes that compress the toes, or trauma to the toenail from stubbing or repetitive pressure such as running. Naturally curved nail shape and genetic predisposition also make some individuals more prone to developing ingrown nails. Poor foot hygiene and prolonged moisture exposure can further increase the risk of the surrounding skin becoming irritated and infected.

Symptoms of Ingrown Toenail

pain and tenderness along one or both sides of the toenail, redness and swelling of the skin surrounding the nail, warmth of the affected area, drainage of fluid or pus if infected, overgrowth of surrounding skin tissue in chronic cases, difficulty wearing closed shoes comfortably, bleeding from the affected area in more severe cases

Treatment & Types of Ingrown Toenail in Hingani, Nanded, Maharashtra

Mild cases can often be managed at home by soaking the foot in warm water several times a day, gently lifting the nail edge away from the skin, and wearing properly fitted, open-toed footwear until it heals. More significant or infected ingrown toenails require professional treatment by a podiatrist, which may include partial removal of the ingrown portion of the nail under local anesthesia, along with antibiotics if infection is present. Recurrent or chronic ingrown toenails may benefit from a minor procedure that permanently narrows the nail bed to prevent the edge from growing into the skin again.

Ingrown toenails are generally classified by severity into three stages: mild, with redness and mild swelling but no discharge; moderate, where infection develops with drainage and increased pain; and severe, where chronic inflammation causes overgrowth of surrounding tissue around the nail edge. They can also be described as acute, resulting from a single trauma or improper trimming, or chronic and recurrent, related to a naturally curved nail shape or ongoing pressure from footwear.
