What is Faecal Incontinence?
Faecal incontinence is the involuntary loss of bowel control, resulting in the unintentional passage of stool or gas, ranging from occasional minor leakage to a complete loss of bowel control. It can significantly affect quality of life, causing embarrassment and social withdrawal, and often results from damage to the anal sphincter muscles, the nerves controlling bowel function, or the rectal reservoir's ability to store stool. It is more common in older adults and women, particularly those with a history of childbirth-related injury, but can affect people of any age depending on the underlying cause.

Causes of Faecal Incontinence
Most commonly caused by damage to the anal sphincter muscles during childbirth, prior anal or rectal surgery, or chronic straining, as well as nerve damage from diabetes, spinal cord injury, or neurological conditions affecting bowel control signals. Other contributing factors include chronic diarrhea, rectal prolapse, and inflammatory bowel disease. Weakening of the pelvic floor with age also reduces the ability to maintain continence.
Symptoms of Faecal Incontinence
Involuntary leakage of stool or gas, urgency with an inability to reach the toilet in time, minor soiling of underwear, inability to control the passage of solid or liquid stool, skin irritation around the anus from frequent leakage, psychological distress and social avoidance
Treatment & Types of Faecal Incontinence in V J B Udyan, Mumbai, Maharashtra
Initial management includes dietary modification to firm up stool consistency, pelvic floor muscle exercises to strengthen the sphincter, and biofeedback therapy to improve coordination of bowel control muscles. Medications to manage diarrhea or constipation address underlying contributing factors, while more severe cases may benefit from sacral nerve stimulation or surgical sphincter repair. A structured bowel management program significantly improves symptoms for most patients.
