What is Aortic Aneurysm?

An aortic aneurysm is an abnormal, localized bulging or ballooning of the wall of the aorta, the body's largest artery, resulting from progressive weakening of the vessel wall. It can occur in the chest (thoracic aortic aneurysm) or abdomen (abdominal aortic aneurysm) and typically enlarges slowly over years without causing symptoms until it becomes very large or ruptures. A ruptured aortic aneurysm causes massive internal bleeding and is a life-threatening surgical emergency with high mortality if not treated immediately. Most aneurysms are discovered incidentally during imaging performed for unrelated reasons.
